Carbon sequestration


Carbon sequestration is the process by which natural and artificial carbon dioxide sinks remove CO2 from the atmosphere that would otherwise persist for a long time.

 


In this section you will learn about the two types of sequestration:

  • Geological sequestration - the separation and capture of CO2 at the point of emissions followed by storage in deep underground geologic formations (also known as carbon capture and storage or CCS)
  • Biological (terrestrial) sequestration - the net removal of CO2 from the atmosphere by plants and micro-organisms and its storage in vegetative biomass and in soils
