Increasing energy efficiency will reduce energy usage in your house. Reducing energy usage will mean fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Reducing our use of hydroelectricity has climate change pay-offs – the less we use in Manitoba means more hydro power exported elsewhere, where it will displace less clean forms of energy.

Homes account for about 20% of all energy used in Canada. This energy is distributed to

  • 67% – space heating and cooling
  • 18% – lighting and appliances
  • 15% – heating water. (1)

In Manitoba, the biggest gains will come from reducing space heating needs since most homes burn fossil fuel (natural gas) for heating.
