Hutterite colonies greening up their act

Manitoba Hutterite colonies like the Vermillion Colony near Sanford are using biomass for heat to replace their dependence on coal. Their generators can produce energy out of corn, cattails, chicken manure and other vegetative waste materials. One colony is using cattail for some of its biomass energy.

Manitoba climate-resilience plans ‘not that good:’ auditor general

Manitoba is still lacking a central policy to assess how climate change will impact the province’s roads, power supply and agriculture, the province’s auditor general said Tuesday. The issue has come up across the country, but “it’s probably worse in Manitoba,” said auditor general Norman Ricard. “They really have not done much.” A spokeswoman for Manitoba Environment Minister Rochelle Squires responded: “The previous government indeed lacked co-ordination in addressing climate change risks. Our government is taking action.”

Husky facing 10 charges over 2016 Saskatchewan pipeline oil spill

Calgary-based Husky appeared in provincial court to face 10 charges resulting from the spill of 225,000 litres of diluted heavy oil from a Husky pipeline in west central Saskatchewan. About 40 per cent of the leaked crude made it into the waterway, forcing communities downstream to shut off a main source of drinking water for almost two months.

Canada, provinces lack clear plan to address climate change, auditors say

A joint audit, conducted by federal Environment Commissioner Julie Gelfand and auditors general in nine provinces, says while many governments have high-level goals to cut emissions, few have detailed plans to actually reach those goals. The audit also says assessments to adapt to climate change risks have been haphazard, inconsistent and lacking in detail, with no timeline for action and no funding.

Kinder Morgan pipeline protests continue in B.C. with 172 arrests over past week

Dozens of demonstrators have been arrested at Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby Terminal in a string protests against the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline. A Protect the Inlet spokesperson says 57 protesters had been arrested by early Saturday evening. This brings the week’s total to 172 arrests.

Even oil companies are now saying climate change will hurt their business

Oil companies are now recognizing that oil demand will peak in the next two decades as renewable energy grows and consumers purchase hundreds of millions of electric vehicles. Exxon Mobil projected a peak in demand and acknowledged that some of its assets “may not be attractive investments” as a result of the shifting energy market.
